Her office was under investigation for months following complains that she and her secretary has abusive behavior towards staff. No charges were framed against her but after discussion with the Prime Minister few hours before the resignation she decided to go. In a statement posted on the Governor General’s website she said, “Everyone has a right to a healthy and safe work environment, at all times and under all circumstances. It appears this was not always the case at the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General. Tensions have arisen at Rideau Hall over the past few months and for that, I am sorry.” Before becoming Governor General, Julie Payette was an astronaut, engineer, scientific broadcaster and corporate director. From 1992 to 2013, Ms. Payette worked as an astronaut and flew two missions in space. She also served many years as CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) at NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas, and was Chief Astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency.
